Fashion on the right track

'Conventional usage in dress, manners, etc., especially of polite society, or conformity to it.'' When you define fashion like that, well, it's just not cute; no fun.

At the launch of the Myer Fashions on the Field enclosure at Flemington on Wednesday, we found finalists who do have fun with fashion and others who find fashion in surprising spots.

Jennifer Marsh (SA finalist) bought her dress on sale online for $18. ''I made all the accessories, covered an old bag, made my headpiece.'' She touched the silver flowers atop her head, ''These I made from the trivets that you put your pots on in the kitchen.'' Crystal Kimber (Queensland finalist) also wore her own creation; ''I'm a fashion school dropout'', she said. ''It's a dress underneath that I bought a couple of years ago in Europe, and then everything else is remnant fabrics, I just went scavenging.'' Touching the yoke of her dress she said, ''This was a pillow.''

Kate Watts (WA finalist, left, pictured with People's Choice winner Elena Gold) couldn't take all the credit for her ensemble. ''My husband [Paul] spotted my dress in London, he made me try it on and off I went.'' What is your husband going to get if you win? ''A kiss.'' Is that all? Paul smiled and nodded, ''I'm happy with that''.

Smart, smarter, smartest

What's the event called? ''Just 'The world of smart'.'' The world of smart? Geez, no pressure.

On Thursday night at St Ali South, buysmartnow.com.au was launched; it's the smart way to buy a smart car online, you just have to go to the dealer to pick it up.

Surrounded by smart we wondered, what are you smart about now … that you used to be kinda dumb about? ''Dressing myself,'' Shura Taft said. ''I've made some of the greatest fashion faux pas of all time. I'll go through the list: I used to wear a shark's tooth necklace and I once wore a Converse, baby-blue, sleeveless, zip-up hoodie. But I've worked it out; it's pretty simple, just plain colours and stay away from necklaces if you're a man.''

Georgie Holliday thought she was smarter, more pragmatic, now, ''with shoes, jumpers, jackets, bigger bags; I'm definitely more practical, dress-wise.'' Georgie Clement was more mobile: ''I'm definitely better at getting around Melbourne. I used to get on the tram from Toorak and think I was going to Chapel Street and end up in Glenferrie Road.''

Dan Anstey, though, was stumped: ''I think I'm still just really bad at everything, 'cause I'm racking my brains now. I'm as bad at everything as I used to be. I might have gotten worse.''

First bite of foodie celebration

Tuesday was the first meal, the first bite, really, of The Age Good Food Month. It was the launch, at Fatto Bar & Cantina, and a first look inside the Van Haandel Group's latest venture, too (The Southbank venue opens Friday, November 8).

But among these first bites, first looks, first likes we wanted to know about the last - what would you eat for your very last meal? ''Oh Jesus,'' Chin Chin's Benjamin Cooper exhaled. ''It would have to be a curry, any sort of curry; I just love curry.''

Maha's Shane Delia seemed to have already thought this through: ''I'd have a big fat bowl of KFC with Japanese mayo and barbecue sauce,'' he said. ''I never ever ever eat it, but I remember eating it ages ago and I thought, 'Oh this is good', but I felt sort of like I'd just cheated on my wife or something.'' Lee Chan (pictured with Keiran Anthony) would choose something nostalgic, ''maybe congee … but I would pimp it up''.

From tastes of comfort to tastes of the town, we asked Noma's Rene Redzepi what he was looking forward to tasting while in Melbourne. ''I hope to make it to Vue de Monde; Cory [Campbell], the head chef, used to be my sous chef many years ago. The only thing that kind of keeps me away, I feel like it's weird being up there.'' Up high? ''I get, like, motion sickness. Cory always says, 'Come up, come up,' but I don't want to sit up there and feel like vomiting.''
