Mantra: Telling Scenes

Music

Album Review

Mantra Telling Scenes.

Mantra Telling Scenes.

MANTRA
Telling Scenes (Ten to Two Records)
★★★★½

If you thought Mantra was good before, wait till you hear this. And if you thought you knew what to expect from Australian hip hop, then jump up and listen in to the expansiveness of Mantra's third album - guaranteed it's something else. Learn Your Language kicks off with a dextrous, energetic rhyme about knowledge of self.

The reggae-tinged party jam Energy is followed up by something totally different. Mantra's lyrical candidness on The Fear is astonishing and exposes the flipside to his usually unbridled positivity.

Quicksilver pushes boundaries, no question. It features a mandolin and opera-style vocals from Simone Page Jones. Mantra sings, and there's no banging beat and no DJ holding it down. This is oz hip hop, but not as you know it.
