He's one of the hotly anticipated attractions at next year's Big Day Out, but electronic artist Flume was the name on everyone's lips at the Independent Music Awards on Wednesday night, taking home four major gongs.

The 21-year-old producer and composer, aka Harley Streten, is hardly an overnight sensation, although his best album, best dance/electronica album and best dance/electronica or club single awards all stemmed from his chart-topping debut album released last November.

Flume also collected the best artist award at the event at Revolt in Kensington.

Local singer/songwriter Vance Joy won Breakthrough Independent Artist and Best Single/EP for his God Loves You When You're Dancing EP, while Victorian seven-piece band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard won Best Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk Album for last year's breakthrough release 12 Bar Bruise and took out the newly created Carlton Dry Musical Grant of $50,000 to further their career through touring or recording.

Paul Kelly's Spring and Fall album won the acclaimed singer/songwriter Best Blues and Roots Album, while other winners included Seth Sentry in the Hip Hop category, Jazz artist Jonathan Zwartz, Catherine Britt for Always Never Enough in the country category and classical artist Amy Dickson.

Future Classic won the Best Independent Label award. Future Classic had 11 nominations, including Flume, in this year's eighth annual awards ceremony.
