Sydney electro pop group Jagwar Ma continue their rise and rise as the hottest Australian act in the UK with two nominations in the Independent Music Awards.

The duo of Jono Ma and Gab Winterfield have recently played a series of sold out shows in Australia but it is in the UK, where three sets at the giant Glastonbury festival earned rave reviews, that they're making the most noise. This came before their debut album, How-lin', was even released in July.

The Jagwar Ma song The Throw is nominated for independent track of the year, in direct competition with New York's global indie superstars Vampire Weekend, while Howlin' is also nominated for independent album of the year. In that category are names such as David Byrne and St Vincent, Vampire Weekend again and The xx. (The xx also earned a nomination in the unusual category of best difficult second album for their Coexist release.)

Joining their compatriots Jagwar Ma as candidates for independent album of the year is the 15th album from Melbourne-raised, Brighton-domiciled Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Push The Sky Away. That album is decidedly independent as it's the first to be released on the band's own Bad Seed label, after a long relationship with the famous Mute label.

The AIM Independent Awards will be presented in early September.
